Welcome to Wiggle Room! My name is Valerie, I’m 26 years old and live in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington DC.  I have a new-found love for the healthy side of life, but can never hide from my sweet tooth!

I grew up in southern Virginia and moved up this way to go to college. Throughout my life, I was always the chubby and heavy kid. You name it, I ate it. (I even ate frosting from the jar, disgusting I know) I had accepted that I would always be overweight, trying all the fad diets under the sun. But guess what? None of them worked, and now I understand why.

As you can imagine, after college my weight was at an all time high of 223 pounds, which was extremely hard on my 5’2″ frame. I decided it was time to change, although I didn’t have health issues yet, it was only a matter of time before my lifetime of hershey’s bars, brownies and cake caught up to me in a BIG way. (no pun intended)

I started small, by watching my portions and serving sizes and I immediately started to drop weight. Then, I added exercise and I never looked back. For me, that was the REAL key to my weight loss. Exercise not only helps my body, but my mind as well. Without it, the day feels a little hazy and I have significantly less energy.

Almost 2 years later, I have lost over 100 pounds and let me tell you, the journey ain’t over! Maintaining a weight loss of that size is an everyday battle, but everyday it gets a little easier. Mind over matter, I always say.

So this is my story, because even the healthiest of diets needs a little wiggle room.


You are probably going to hear me talk about lots of different people in my life, so this is a little cheat sheet for all you out there who don’t know me yet!

Ed – Boyfriend

Ed and I have been together for about a year now and he so truly supportive of me in every sense of the word. Losing that much weight plays mind tricks with you and sometimes he has to bring me back to reality and tell me to be quiet and be proud of myself. I don’t know what I would do without him sometimes. (Even though he doesn’t always understand why I eat some of the things I do)

I will convert him to a vegetable lover one of these days, just don’t tell him I said that kay?

My parents are 2 of the greatest people I know. Family is so important and those are the ones who will be there for you when no one else is. I have been a pain in the you know where many times in my life, but my parents are always there to catch me when I stumble and fall and I am forever grateful to them for their support. I might be a little biased, but I have the best parents  EVER.

My sisters have always been my best friends and helped raise me to be the person that I am today. I look up to them in so many ways and each of them have instilled in me something unique.

Mindy is a go-getter and a “take on the world” type of person, and I love that about her. She can juggle many things at once (ahem, sometimes too many things ;-)), but it’s always with love and kindness in her heart. She was born to be a teacher and many times I “channeled” her in my own classroom.

Jenny is the strongest person I know. Although she has struggled immensely in her life, you might never know it. (You can read her blog here) I look up to her in so many ways and can always ask her for advice. Her laugh is contagious (and loud sometimes) but boy will she tell you like it is.
